Assam CM Sarma replied via a tweet: “Our main focus is to keep the spirit of North-East alive. What happened at the Assam-Mizoram border is unacceptable to the people of both the states. After the July 26 violence, both the Assam and Mizoram police registered separate cases in the name of each other’s political leaders and police and civil officials.

Both the office bearers cited several measures taken to de-escalate tension along the Assam-Mizoram border.

The Chief Secretaries and DGPs of both the states attended a meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on July 28, where it was decided to deploy a Neutral Central Force (CRPF) at the conflict site. Earlier both the Chief Secretaries had met in Delhi for the bilateral meeting.

Following this, an advisory was sent by the central government to both the states to maintain peace and normalcy along their inter-state border.

Both office-bearers insisted that the July 26 violence was an “isolated incident” and there was no chance of a similar flare-up in the future.

On June 5, two abandoned houses on the Mizoram-Assam border were torched by unidentified persons, triggering tension along the unstable interstate border.

Almost a month after the incident, fresh border standoff broke out with both sides trading allegations of encroachment on each other’s land.

While Mizoram accused Assam of encroaching on its land and forcibly seizing the Atlang area, about 5 km west of Vairangte village, the neighboring state allegedly accused Mizoram of betel nut and bananas, 10 km inside Hailakandi district. charged with planting saplings and building structures.

Two temporary camps set up by Mizoram Police in the disputed area were recently damaged by the Assam Police during a confrontation.

Officials said the two camps set up by the Mizos and a COVID-19 testing center set up by them were also part of efforts to thwart Mizoram’s bid to annex its land along the border.
