Center offered ‘immediate’ suspension of cases to protesting farmers: Sources

Sources told News18 that in a mega outreach to protesting farmers, the Center has reportedly sent a fresh proposal, offering to “immediately” suspend all cases against farmers.

In Delhi, 39 cases were registered against farmers for protesting against agricultural laws, the Union Home Ministry had informed Parliament in February. A senior police officer had earlier told News18 that cases against farmers have been registered by the state and if the government decides, they can be withdrawn by filing an affidavit in the court.

The development comes after a crucial meeting convened by the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) at the Singhu border to decide the fate of the year-long farmers’ agitation, in which a five-member panel pointed out “loopholes” in the Centre’s earlier proposal. had indicated. deadlock.

Speaking to the media, SKM’s committee member Ashok Dhawale said: “We appreciate that the government is ready for talks and is giving something in writing but there were some flaws in the proposal, so last night, we did it with some amendments.” Sent back with us and awaiting their response.”

Pointing out the issues with the proposal, Dhawale said there is a need to constitute an MSP-centric committee comprising members of the farmers’ union. “The government also said that the cases registered against us will be withdrawn after the agitation is over, which is wrong,” he said. We don’t like sitting here in the cold.”

On the subject of compensation to the kin of farmers killed during the protest, he said the relief “has been accepted in principle, we need something concrete like the Punjab model”. “They had also promised to withdraw the electricity bill, but now they want to discuss it with the stakeholders and then place it in Parliament. It’s contradictory.”

The panel is scheduled to meet Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar to discuss farmers’ issues and pending demands. He is also likely to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah. A senior farmer leader said a decision is likely to be taken later after the 2 pm meeting of the SKM.

The SKM, which is spearheading the agitation, on Saturday constituted a five-member panel to hold talks with the government on the pending demands of the protesting farmers, including legal guarantee on minimum support price (MSP) of crops, compensation to farmers. Cases were withdrawn against the kin of farmers and protesters killed during the agitation against three agricultural laws.

Sources told News18 that the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) will take a final call on the move, which comes after the central government sent a written draft to a five-member committee of SKM about the issues raised by the farmers’ protests.
