Bhubaneswar: Center 3,323 crore has been allocated to Orissa Below Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) for the current 2021-22 financial year. The central scheme aims to provide clean tap water to every rural household by March 2024.
An official statement said that the grant to the state during the current financial year is a four-fold increase as Odisha received Rs 812 crore in the last 2020-21 financial year.
While approving the allotment to the State, union water power Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawati Assured full support to the state to make provision for supply of tap water to every rural household by March 2024.
There has been a significant improvement in ensuring tap water connections to rural households since the launch of JJM on August 15, 2019 across the country, official sources said.
In Odisha, out of total 85.66 lakh rural households, only 3.10 lakh households had tap water connections, which is 3.63%. In the last three years, over 22.84 lakh households in the state have been provided with tap water connections under JJM, while a total of 30.3% rural households have been given tab water connections.
While Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department has been the implementing agency for JJM in the state, it has set a target of providing tap water connections to 21.31 lakh rural households during the current financial year. Similarly, additional 22.53 lakh tenacity Water connections are planned in the year 2022-23 and another 18.87 lakh tap water connections in 2023-24.
According to official sources, the Union Jal Shakti Minister in a letter to the Chief Minister Naveen PatnaikIt has been urged to start the work of providing tap water connections in all villages so that the target of covering all rural households in the state can be achieved by March 2024.
As the scheme is being implemented with a 50:50 fund sharing pattern between the Central and State Governments, the total funds available to ensure piped drinking water to all rural households for the 2021-22 financial year will exceed Rs 6,500 crore. will be higher (with an equal share of the state)
In addition to the allocation under the JJM, the 15th Finance Commission has approved Rs 1,002 crore to Panchayati Raj institutions in the state for managing water supply in villages and ensuring better sanitation in villages.
Apart from tap water connections in rural households, the Center is also laying emphasis on providing tap water to children in schools and Anganwadi centres. In Odisha, tap water connections have been provided to 25,820 schools (47%) and 11,913 Anganwadi centers (22%).
