World Oceans Day 2023: Every year June 8 is observed as World Oceans Day across the world. Now more than ever it is important to raise our voices and raise our arms to help protect the environment including our oceans. What giant creatures live in the vast depths of the ocean and how do we learn more about them? To celebrate World Oceans Day, here are some engaging documentaries on Discover+ that will tell you about the oceans and what’s in it:

Despite two-thirds of our planet being covered by water, the oceans and their many inhabitants remain an unsolved mystery. The show travels to the very depths of the ocean to reveal the spectacular diversity of life. Using underwater photography, the filmmaker investigates the natural history of the world’s oceans and reveals the complex dynamics of marine life.

Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II, a seven-part BBC series, opened people’s eyes to the dangers of single-use plastic in 2017 – with shocking footage showing albatross chicks ingesting plastic and a baby whale, who was thought to have died from her mother. The Toxic To Milk documentary from the amount of plastic in the ocean also shows why our oceans, from their tropical coral reefs to vast underwater forests, must be saved.

Great White Open Ocean

Great White Open Ocean is a 90-minute documentary featuring shark diving expert Jimmy Partington. A year after nearly dying in the jaws of a great white shark, Partington returned to the water to recover from the traumatic event, but the experience quickly became a life-and-death fight. It is filmed by Shark Week filmmaker Jeff Kur.
