The CBI has arrested five persons, including a Navy officer of the rank of Commander, for allegedly leaking confidential information. An investigation related to this alleged information leak of administrative and commercial nature with some unauthorized personnel has come to the fore and is being investigated by an appropriate government agency.

An internal investigation is also being pursued by the Indian Navy.

The report said the confidential information pertains to an ongoing submarine project in return for illegal gratification.

He said the agency had launched a covert operation last month in which two retired Navy personnel and a naval officer besides several private persons were taken into custody.

He said that till now the agency has conducted searches at 19 places including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad from where important documents and digital evidence have been seized and investigation is on.

It is alleged that the commander had discussed important details regarding the ongoing project of modernization of Kilo class submarines with two retired officers for alleged illegal gratification, he said.

He said the agency’s Anti-Corruption Unit, which deals with sensitive and high-profile corruption cases, was tasked to trace the leak of information, following which the operation was launched.

He said the unit has interrogated the arrested officer and several other officers and ex-servicemen who are in regular touch with the retired personnel.

He said the CBI was conducting forensic analysis of the digital products used by the officer to ascertain whether the information was in the hands of vested interests.
