The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Thursday dismissed reports that the trailer of “72 Hurrayan” was denied certification, saying the matter is “under due process”. Reports of alleged denial of censor certificate for the film’s trailer sparked a debate on creative freedom and censorship. Earlier, the film’s co-producer Ashok Pandit had claimed that the censor board has refused to certify the trailer of the film which is slated to release on July 7.

Now reacting to the same, CBFC said, “Misleading reports are being circulated in certain sections of the media that a film titled ‘Bahattar Hurain (72 Hurain)’ and its trailer are pending certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Contrary to reports, CBFC says that the film ‘Bahattar Hurain (72 Hurain)’ was given ‘A’ certification and the certificate was issued on 4-10-2019.

Starring Pavan Malhotra and Aamir Bashir in the lead, the Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan directorial film focuses on the consequences of violent extremism. The filmmaker won the National Film Award for Best Direction in 2021 for the film.

The CBFC said the makers had applied for a certificate for the film’s trailer on June 19 and it was “examined as per the guidelines issued under section 5B(2) of the Cinematograph Act, 1952”. “The applicant was asked to submit the requisite documents under the notice and on receipt of the same, the certification was granted subject to modifications.

“A show cause notice informing the applicant/film producer about the modifications was issued on 27-6-2023 and it is pending response/compliance of the applicant. Thus, while the matter is sub-judice Even misleading reports cannot be considered or disseminated. Due process,” the note said.

“72 Hurayn” premiered under the Indian Panorama section at the 2019 International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where it received the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal Special Mention.

Earlier this month, prominent religious and political leaders of Kashmir condemned the negative portrayal of Muslims in “72 Hurayn”, saying the film “hurts the sentiments” of the community. Produced by Sarathi Entertainment and Aliens Pictures, “72 Hurayan” is written by Anil Pandey and Junaid Wasi.
