High-resolution cameras mounted on the bodies of Vande Bharat Express trains have emerged as the key to allaying concerns of railway officials that criminals were getting away with damaging the trains with stones.

The body-mounted cameras of the newly introduced Howrah-New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express have recorded four persons, who are now being probed in connection with the stone-pelting incident that damaged two window panes of the train on January 3.

The incident, the second in as many days, reportedly happened when the train was on its way to New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal. The Chief Public Relations Officer of the Railways told News18 on Thursday that the incident took place when the train was in Bihar.

Body cameras recorded the incident at 12:54 pm that day and the North East Frontier Railway as well as the West Bengal Railway Police are probing whether these were the four men who pelted stones at the train.

High-resolution cameras – two mounted next to train headlights, three next to all doors and two CCTV cameras in coaches – have emerged as the key to allaying railway officials’ concerns that criminals may damage trains after were leaving Stone.

“Railway Protection Force has conducted a thorough investigation on the incident along with State GRP and State Police. Based on the video footage, the Railways has already identified the stone pelters from the video. Appropriate action is being taken to take legal and punitive action against the offenders. State authorities and state police are being accordingly advised to nab the culprits and initiate legal process,” said Eklavya Chakraborty, CPRO Eastern Railway.

The cameras also captured visuals of stone pelting incident near coach C-13 at 3.28 pm on January 2 when the train was crossing Kumarganj area of ​​Maldah district. As visibility was low due to fog and sunset, the faces of the criminals were not clear enough for identification.

The Railways has approached the West Bengal Railway Police to seek help from local sources to identify the culprit.

The incidents have prompted the BJP to demand an NIA probe, while the Trinamool Congress has hinted at a “conspiracy to defame the state”.
