Case registered against six members of ‘Jat Panchayat’ for ostracizing 13 couples for inter-caste marriage in Maharashtra

A case has been registered against six members of a Jat panchayat (group of caste leaders) in Maharashtra’s Sangli district for allegedly ordering social boycott of at least 13 couples for inter-caste marriages. The police gave this information on Sunday.

He told that the Jat Panchayat of the nomadic tribe Nandiwale community had given a fresh order for social boycott in its meeting held at Palus in Sangli on January 9.

In this case one of the victims and the complainant said that these 13 couples were married years ago in different parts of the district.

Inspector Vikas Jadhav of Palus police station said, “We have registered a case against six members of the Jat panchayat for allegedly social boycotting 13 couples for marrying outside their community.

A complaint in this regard was lodged by Prakash Bhosale (42), who said that he himself had entered into an inter-caste marriage in 2007, after which he was ostracized from the community by the Jat Panchayat.

“There are many victims like me from our community who were boycotted even for marrying outside caste. In December last year, a meeting was called by some members of the community in Karad (in Satara district), in which this decision was taken. Was told that these couples should be allowed to be part of the community again. I was present at that meeting.”

However, some members later objected to the decision and called a meeting in Palus on January 9 to explain that these couples could not be taken back to the community, Bhosale said.

After this we contacted Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti and with their help a complaint was registered against six members of Jat Panchayat, he said. Inspector Jadhav said the six people were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Maharashtra Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2016.
