Surat: Police on Monday registered a case against seven people, including former Congress municipal councilor Nilesh Kumbhani, for allegedly defaming a private school and its trustees.
Mahesh Ramani, the trustee of Ashadeep International School, had lodged a complaint with the Sarthana police station that the accused had been harassed continuously for a few days in the month of August.
Besides Kumbhani, cops booked Tushar Aagaliya, Sanjay Dawra, Jay Nadiyadara, Dhuvin Savaliya, Mamta Savani and Suresh Padsala for defamation, unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation and others.
Ramani said in his complaint that Kumbhani and his associates had initially started demanding complete fee waiver for all the students studying in his school. On Ramani’s refusal, the accused held a meeting in a field and started sharing derogatory details publicly. Later, the accused also printed and openly distributed posters defaming the complainant and his school. They put up posters on a rickshaw and sent it to different parts of Kapodara and Sarthana to share the defamation information.
The accused also staged a sit-in outside the school as the classes continued. Ramani alleged that he was pressurized to settle with the accused by raising the issue of fees.
