Cardiologist explains what went wrong with Keke’s handling of heart attack

Fans are still not over over the sad demise of singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known by his stage name KK. The singer died of cardiac arrest on 31 May following his concert at Kolkata’s Nazrul Manch at the age of 53. According to the Indian Heart Association, heart disease is the number one cause of mortality in Indians, and it is called. ‘Silent epidemic.’ IHA said that India 50% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur under the age of 50 and 25% occur under the age of 40. Indian women have also not been able to escape from the clutches of heart diseases, as they also have a high death rate from heart disease. It was told that KK was taken to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Experts believe that the singer would have been alive only if the situation had been handled a little differently and carefully.

Dr Rajneesh Kapoor, Vice President of Interventional Cardiology, Heart Institute, Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, told Hindustan Times that the singer should have been taken to the hospital in a comfortable manner rather than in a hurry. The expert said that when one experiences chest discomfort, which is a major symptom of a heart attack, one should not run and should also avoid creating worry about the condition. However, the viral video – in which KK is being escorted out of the concert area – was the exact opposite.

“The patient should be taken to a place where he is lying down. So that instead of creating a lot of anxiety around the situation, the heart rate gets reduced. When people start running, it will make the situation worse,” said the cardiologist. He further suggested that in emergency situations a “simple aspirin or sorbitrate” could also be given to the patient.

According to Kapoor, things would have been different had KK’s chest troubles been addressed at the right time and in the right way.

Due to the hectic lifestyle of today, it has become even more important to pay attention to health. Kapoor suggests that one should examine oneself after the age of 40, and also have “annual check-up of heart, fasting blood sugar, fasting cholesterol, fasting lipid profile and other blood tests and a good stress test”.

People can also go for advanced tests such as “CT corner scan, conventional angiography” to keep a close check on BP and cholesterol levels as they also lead to heart issues.
