Captain Amarinder Singh congratulates his successor Charanjit Singh Channi

Outgoing Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday congratulated the next Chief Minister of the state, Charanjit Singh Channi.

Amarinder Singh said in a tweet, “My best wishes to Charanjit Singh Channi. I hope he is able to keep the border state of Punjab safe and protect our people from the growing security threat from across the border.”

Senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh on Saturday resigned as Punjab chief minister after months of political tussle, saying he left the post feeling “humiliated”.

At the same time, he said that “there is always an option for future politics and I will use that option”.

Earlier, senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was being said to be the frontrunner for this post. However, after Channi’s name was announced, Randhawa said, “I welcome the decision of the party high command.”

“It is the decision of the high command…, I welcome it. Channi is like my younger brother. I am not disappointed at all,” Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa told reporters.

Amarinder Singh also termed Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh as a ‘disaster’ which would not be acceptable to him as his successor. Singh on Saturday resigned as Punjab chief minister and said he felt “humiliated” by the way the party has dealt with the long-running crisis.

Channi (58), a minister in the outgoing Amarinder Singh cabinet, hails from the Dalit community. Channi’s selection assumes significance as the discord-hit Congress is facing assembly elections in less than five months.

The development comes a day after Congress veteran Amarinder Singh resigned from the chief minister’s post at a time when there was a power tussle with state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu in less than five months for the assembly elections.
