Bhubaneswar: The old passenger reservation system (PRS) and booking counters’ building in front of the Bhubaneswar railway station have been pulled down and levelling of the land is under way. This gives one the impression of the redevelopment work there having begun in full swing, but, in reality, it is yet to take off.
The PRS and booking counters were shifted from the old building to a temporary one near the RMS office in the circulating area of ​​the station in November 2016. In the very next month, the state government had given its approval to the Bhubaneswar Development Authority ,BDA) for the implementation of the railway station multimodal hub project there.
However, the project has been stuck owing to inordinate delay and confusion. Right from the works department to the BDA, nobody took the initiative to start the project. After much delay and change of dates, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Indian Railways and the state government on September 19, 2019 in New Delhi.
The project includes the construction of a terminal building for the railway station, a public car parking area, dedicated pick-up and drop-off lanes for taxi, auto-rickshaws and other vehicles and a city bus terminal. The new station building and the two new railway lines with platforms will be developed in an integrated manner on the land belonging to the Railways and the state government. The proposed building will have ground plus five floors.
