The creators of the long-running animated series The Simpsons made the decision to eliminate the background character Larry the Barfly.

In a shocking twist, a beloved character was killed off in a recent episode of The Simpsons, leaving fans both heartbroken and confused. It has been over three decades since the show has been on our screens, with its first episode coming out in December 1989. However, after such a long time, the death of a character has gotten dedicated viewers in a fix. It was none other than Larry the Barfly aka Larry Dalrymple, one of Homer’s best friends and a regular at Moe’s bar. His death took place in the Cremains of the Day, the 765th episode, which also revealed Larry’s full name.

In what came as a sad experience for viewers, the episode explores the aftermath of Larry’s death as Homer and their group come to terms with the mysteries of their late friend’s life.

As the episode shows Larry’s death at the bar, later Moe, Homer, Lenny and Carl turn up at his funeral only to realise that they don’t know much about their friend. They feel even worse after Larry’s mother pays an emotional tribute to her late son and says, “My Lawrence always talked about his best friends, the fellows at Moe’s Tavern. It would warm my heart if they came up and shared fond memories of my son.”

Fans React To The Simpsons Death

While many seemed to have discovered a newfound appreciation for the under-the-radar character, some even mourned his death and shared confusion about the turn of events.

A person wrote on Reddit, “Does anyone else find it odd that the Simpsons would give Larry a ‘spotlight’ episode and not even mention this weirdo once?” While another commented, “Honestly I didn’t know that barfly’s name was Larry. Like I don’t know the name of the guy in the picture. I’ve seen him in a ton of episodes, but I don’t think they ever referred to him by name.”

“Just learned they are killing off Larry on The Simpsons tomorrow,” one person wrote, a person wrote on X. Another expressed disbelief over Larry’s death and commented, “I can’t believe they killed off Larry Dalrymple on The Simpsons last night.”

Notably, the long-running animated series is airing its 35th season, with the latest episode focused on Larry’s sudden death.
