‘Calling any national team a ‘B’ side is disrespectful

In a rare event, two Indian cricket teams in different parts of the world will face two different opponents in Tests and ODIs. While the Test team is in England for the red-ball tour, the limited overs team has traveled to Sri Lanka to participate in the white-ball matches.

The BCCI sending a second team to Sri Lanka that does not include other superstars including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, who are in England, did not go down well with former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who said it was an insult to Sri Lanka. For that a B team will be playing against them.

The statement of Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning captain had drawn a lot of criticism in the cricket fraternity. Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta also disagrees with Ranatunga’s comments, saying he would not call the team traveling to Sri Lanka another strong team.

Although the keeper acknowledged that many of the first-choice players are in the UK, Dasgupta highlighted the presence of several capped players, including Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, on the Sri Lanka tour. and others.

“I wouldn’t call this side the second row side without a stretch of the imagination. Secondly, I think it is disrespectful to call any national team a B team. If you are representing your national team at the highest level then it is insulting to call it B side,” Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel.

Dasgupta also claimed that the cricket fraternity will now see teams playing white-ball and red-ball cricket together due to the pandemic.

Further, Dasgupta advised Sri Lanka to focus on their team and look at ways to prepare the players like they used to do earlier. Sri Lanka cricket team is going through difficult times these days. The team was recently against England where they skipped a game which was abandoned due to rain.
