Bye-election results 2023 LIVE: Counting of votes for key by-elections in Tamil Nadu’s Erode East, Chinchwad assembly seat and Maharashtra’s Kasba Peth assembly constituency. Counting of votes for Sagardighi in West Bengal and Ramgarh assembly seat in Jharkhand also took place today.

The counting of votes for the crucial Erode East assembly constituency began at 8 am. According to senior officials, all arrangements have been made for the counting of votes for the bypolls to be held on February 27. The counting of votes is expected to be over by 5 pm. The voting percentage for the Erode election was 74.7%.

The bypoll is expected to test the popularity of the ruling DMK government and set the mood for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The main opposition AIADMK made every effort to corner the ruling party on several issues. Edappadi K Palaniswami led the campaign and O Panneerselvam’s camp withdrew its candidate. For the AIADMK, the Supreme Court directive allowing Palaniswami to continue leading the party proved to be the much-needed shot in the arm for the party.

Meanwhile, the counting of votes is also underway for the Chinchwad Assembly seat in Maharashtra and the Kasba Peth assembly constituency in Maharashtra’s Pune district. Voting for the by-election took place on 26 February. Maharashtra’s Pune district recorded 50.47 per cent polling in the bypolls to Chinchwad assembly seat and 50.06 per cent in Kasba Peth assembly constituency on Sunday.

The by-elections for Kasba Peth and Chinchwad constituencies were necessitated due to the demise of their respective Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs Mukta Tilak and Laxman Jagtap.

Bengal and Jharkhand by-elections

Counting of votes is underway for two more bypolls to Sagardighi Assembly Constituency in West Bengal’s Murshidabad District and Ramgarh Assembly Constituency in Jharkhand. The bypoll to the Sagardighi assembly seat was necessitated by the death of three-time TMC MLA and state minister Subrata Saha in December last year.

The bypoll in Ramgarh was necessitated following the disqualification of Congress MLA Mamta Devi following her conviction in a criminal case.

  • Erode East by-election: Nearly 75 per cent of the 2.27 lakh voters cast their votes in the Erode East bypoll held on Monday in Tamil Nadu. The election was necessitated by the death of Elangovan’s son and Congress MLA E Thirumahan Evra in January this year. While 77 candidates are in the fray, a fight is likely between the Congress and the AIADMK.
  • Sagardighi bypoll: The bypoll was necessitated after the death of three-time TMC MLA and state minister Subrata Saha in December last year. The TMC, which has been winning the seat since 2011, had also won 2021 by a margin of nearly 50,000 votes, securing over 50 per cent of the total votes polled, while the BJP and the Congress-Left alliance secured 24 votes. . percent and 19 percent respectively.
  • Ramgarh polls: The bypoll was necessitated due to the disqualification of Congress MLA Mamata Devi after her conviction in a criminal case. Though 18 candidates, including 14 independents, are in the fray, the contest will mainly be between the ruling JMM-led coalition partner Congress and the AJSU party, which has tied up with the BJP for the bypolls.
  • Pune by-election: The by-elections for Kasba Peth and Chinchwad constituencies were necessitated due to the demise of their respective Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs Mukta Tilak and Laxman Jagtap.
    , The Kasba seat in Pune city was contested between Hemant Rasane of the BJP and Ravindra Dhangekar of the Congress, supported by the MVA alliance of the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).
    , In Chinchwad, an industrial town near Pune city, the contest was between Ashwini Jagtap of the BJP and Nana Kate of the NCP. Shiv Sena (UBT) rebel Rahul Kalate was also in the fray in the Chinchwad constituency, making it a triangular contest.
