KOLKATA: In a violent scene played out on a Sarsuna road on Wednesday evening, a bus conductor – who was in a hurry to take his ailing mother to hospital – allegedly killed a rickshaw puller by slashing his neck when the latter had refused a ride and blocked the way.
Victim Robi Das’s refusal and delay in moving the rickshaw, which had blocked the road, apparently enraged the accused, Sushanta Samaddar, who attacked him with a piece of broken glass, according to some locals. Slashed in the neck, Das died of blood loss.
Police said initially, Samaddar had asked Das to take his mother to hospital by his rickshaw but when Das refused, an argument broke out. Samaddar then tried to put his mother on his bus so that the driver could take her to hospital. But Das blocked the narrow road with his rickshaw, claimed locals.
“On seeing Das not cooperating, Samaddar became furious and picked up a piece of broken glass from the spot and assaulted him. He slashed Das’s neck,” said an officer. “Das himself went to Sarsuna BPHC Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries subsequently. The accused was apprehended from the spot. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem.”
