Kolkata: A police constable was killed and 13 others were injured on Thursday when a bus carrying passengers rammed into a wall attached to the gate. fort william – Army’s Eastern Command Headquarters – whose driver has lost control of the wheels, an official said.
He said the minibus, which was on its way from Metiabruz to Howrah, rammed a motorcycle-borne police constable before it collided with a brick wall of the British-era fort near Hastings area at around 12.30 pm.
Vivekananda Dab, who was working in Kolkata Police Reserve Force, was declared “brought dead” by doctors at the nearby SSKM Hospital, the official said.
“We had to use a crane to get him out from under the bus,” he explained.
The injured passengers were also taken to the government-run SSKM Hospital and the condition of at least four of them is stated to be “critical”, the official said.
“It seems that the brakes had failed and the driver, in an attempt to stop the speeding bus, hit a tree and then a brick wall,” he said.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra, who visited the accident site, said the matter is being investigated and more details will be available after a detailed investigation.
