Bully Bye Creator Arrested: Mumbai Police Arrests 'Mastermind' As Delhi Police

The bully bye controversy came to the fore on January 1 when several Muslim women found themselves listed for ‘auction’.

New Delhi:

Delhi Police said today that the main conspirator in the Bulli Bai case, in which Muslim women were put up for ‘auction’ online, has been arrested from Assam.

“Neeraj Bishnoi, arrested from Assam by the IFSO team of Delhi Police Special Cell, is the main conspirator and creator of ‘Bully Bai’ on GitHub and the main Twitter account holder of the app,” said KPS Malhotra, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit told the media.

Police sources said that 21-year-old Bishnoi is a second year engineering student at an institute in Bhopal. He was arrested from his hometown in Assam’s Jorhat and will be brought to Delhi this afternoon, the source said.

This is the fourth arrest in the case, which sparked an uproar after prominent Muslim women journalists, lawyers and activists who are outspoken on social and political issues were targeted in a disgusting ‘auction’. As part of the ‘auction’, manipulated photos of targets spread across age groups were put up on social media networks.

Earlier, three arrests were made by the Cyber Cell of Mumbai Police. Earlier, 21-year-old student Mayank Rawal, 19-year-old Shweta Singh and engineering student Vishal Kumar Jha have been arrested. Mumbai Police has named Shweta Singh as the mastermind of the case.

The controversy came to the fore on January 1 when several Muslim women found themselves listed for ‘auction’.

The egregious app appears to be a clone of ‘Sully Deals’, which sparked a controversy last year by offering users ‘Sully’ – a derogatory term used by right-wing trolls for Muslim women. Which was hosted by the same platform GitHub.

Several opposition leaders, including Congress’s Rahul Gandhi and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, urged the government to crack down on the platform and bring justice to those behind it.
