Mangaluru: Mangaluru Municipal Corporation (MCC) has given a strict three-month deadline to all bulk solid waste generators in the city to start wet waste processing in their buildings and to set up on-site waste treatment composting units by October 31.
MCC commissioner Akshay Sridhar held a meeting on Solid Ak waste management Rules 2016 and Mangaluru Municipal Corporation Solid Waste Treatment Bye-laws at MCC’s Mangala Auditorium on Tuesday. The meeting highlighted the investigation going on in relation to the writ petition Mangalore Municipal Solid Waste Management filed in the High Court. Apartments with more than 30 homes and establishments (hotels, hospitals, lodges, wedding halls, catering, etc.) are supposed to compulsorily build on-site composting units and process waste at the source. Notice in this regard was issued to all bulk solid waste generators. Considering the gravity of the current waste disposal system, all stakeholders were given a strict three-month period to start wet waste processing in their buildings. Directions were also issued for manufacturing of composting units adopting technology to process wet waste developed by companies approved by National Green Tribunal (NGT), said the commissioner.
“If bulk solid waste generators fail to comply with the guidelines and do not construct onsite waste processing units before October 31, they will be fined double every day starting November 1,” the commissioner warned.
