BTS will meet Joe Biden at the White House next week to discuss anti-Asian hate crimes with US President

BTS members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook are set to meet US President Joe Biden at the White House next week. The two-time Grammy-nominated K-pop group will discuss anti-Asian hate crimes and celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month.

According to Deadline, the White House confirmed the development on Thursday. “President Biden previously spoke about his commitment to combating the increase of anti-Asian hate crimes and in May 2021 law enforcement with the resources to implement, investigate and report hate crimes and ensure The COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act was signed to provide that information on hate crimes is more accessible to the AA and NHPI communities,” the White House said.

“President Biden and BTS will discuss the importance of diversity and inclusion as youth ambassadors on the BTS platform who spread the message of hope and positivity around the world,” the White House said.

Last year, BTS came forward to raise its voice against Asian American hate crimes following the tragic Atlanta spa shooting in which several Asians were killed. In March 2021, the members issued a joint statement on Twitter and expressed their ‘sadness and anger’ against the crimes against Asians.

“We cannot express in words the pain of being subjected to such hatred and violence,” BTS said. “Our own experiences are insignificant compared to what happened in the past few weeks. But these experiences were enough to make us feel powerless and take away our self-esteem,” the group said.

“What is happening right now cannot be separated from our identity as Asian. We needed a lot of time to discuss this carefully and think deeply about how we should deliver our message. But what our voice should tell is clear,” BTS said. “You, me and we all have a right to be respected. We will stand together,” he had said.
