BTS organized a one-day theatrical live streaming event only to allow them to dance on stage around the world. In India, PVR streamed the show live on Saturday and replayed the recording the same evening.

On Saturday, several BTS ARMYs from different cities in India came together to watch Permission to Dance on Stage – Seoul at a PVR theater near them. Videos went viral online, showing BTS fans singing and dancing to the tune of K-pop group songs in theaters. The theatrical series hosted two shows on Saturday – a live streaming show at 2 pm followed by a show that replayed the concert. Considering there were only two shows, tickets sold like hotcakes and before we knew it, the Housefull banner was up.

Speaking with News18, Kamal Gyanchandani, CEO of PVR Pictures Ltd and Chief of Strategy at PVR Ltd, revealed that he saw 90 per cent occupancy in cities that streamed Seoul concerts – allowing dancing on stage. “In all the cities where we played, the occupancy was 90 per cent. The average ticket price was around Rs 1200 and this is the highest we have ever charged for any kind of optional content. 90 percent of the viewers of these shows were young teens, girls and women in the age group of 13 to 22. It’s something you don’t see often.”

When asked whether both the shows performed better than The Kashmir Files and Radhe Shyam, Kamal said that the BTS concert and The Kashmir Files saw more or less same engagement. “The content is not comparable in this case as The Kashmir Files and Radhe Shyam were playing in many shows a lot more than BTS but I would say that Kashmir Files is a known fact that the occupancy was close to 100. Percentage on Saturday and Sunday. So I would say that BTS Concert and Kashmir Files occupancy was more or less same and Radhe Shyam was slightly less than Kashmir Files and BTS. But like I said, these are not strictly comparable as Radhe Shyam was playing in many more shows, in too many theatres,” he said.

Although Lotus didn’t delve into the revenue it generated in India, Variety reported that BTS Permission to Dance on Stage: Seoul collected a global box office collection of $32.6 million from 3,711 theaters in 75 theatrical markets around the world. “For context, concert screenings brought in more money in a single day than some pandemic-era Hollywood films generated over their entire opening weekend,” the report noted.
