BTS fans criticize James Corden for calling ARMYs ’15-year-old girls’, group’s UN visit ‘unusual’

The South Korean boy band BTS shares a wonderful relationship with television host James Corden, but the latter’s recent comments on the K-pop group have drawn strong criticism from BTS’s fanbase, ARMY. The septet, consisting of RM, Jin, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, Wei and Jungkook, recently gave a speech at the moment of the UN General Assembly’s Sustainable Development Goals and also allowed dancing in the assembly hall and outside grounds.

Three years after last attending the United Nations General Assembly, the group returned to New York to attend this year’s session as a special presidential envoy to future generations and culture.

Corden mocked the Bangtan Boys’ visit to the United Nations, saying, “The United Nations General Assembly started this morning in New York City, and it started with some very unusual visitors… BTS was there. BTS visited the UN … although many people are saying why are BTS, world leaders have no choice but to take BTS seriously. BTS has one of the biggest ARMY on planet earth. Historic moment. This It’s actually the first time that 15-year-old girls everywhere have found themselves wishing they were Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.”

Corden referred to BTS fans as a ’15-year-old’ and called the band an ‘unusual visitor’, which did not sit well with ARMY, who took to Twitter to express their anger. One user wrote, ‘1. It was not “unusual” for BTS to be there. They have come 3 times. 2. They weren’t “visiting”. He was the envoy of the President who was invited to speak. 3. Teenage girls are legitimate, innovative, smart, and set a lot of trends, though we’re not all teens or girls,” while another expressed, “Thoughts about that James Corden clip. At first the fans call a group of 15 year old girls. Very sexy. It is a phrase meant to undermine and invalidate the interests of women. BTS has fans as diverse as age, gender and race because they have value and essence.”

However, CBS’s The Late Late Show with James Corden has removed the videos after facing backlash.

BTS fans were more disappointed as the TV host shared a great relationship with the septet. He has interviewed him several times and seems to share a lovely bond with Jimin who addresses Corden as ‘Papa Cobbler’.

Meanwhile, the group addressed a range of important topics in its speech, from climate change to vaccination against COVID-19. “Some of you heard the news that we’re coming to the United Nations and a lot of you were wondering if we’ve been vaccinated. And I’ll take this opportunity to say yes, all seven of us, sure. Obviously, we have received the vaccination. The vaccination was a ticket of sorts to be able to meet our fans and be able to stand here in front of you today,” J-Hope said.

BTS launched its Love Myself campaign with UNICEF in 2017, and it was the subject of their first UN speech, delivered in English by RM. This time the band members took turns speaking in Korean, which was translated in real time for the benefit of all.
