Acting on the information, a BSF team reached the spot and seeing the personnel, the people engaged in cigarette shipment tried to run away. However, BSF personnel managed to arrest four people including two Chattisgarh residents, and seized 43 coaches. A senior BSF official said that the BSF is conducting more searches in the area.
“Police recovered 43 cartons, each containing 1,000 packets of cigarettes, while the other carton contained 900 packets. 43,900 packets of Gold Flake cigarettes were made in Turkey. Each packet costs Rs 390. The total value of the consignment is Rs 1,71,21,000,” the BSF said in a statement.
A pickup van and three mobile phones were also seized during the operation.
The arrested people have been identified as Arshad Hussain of Singarband village in Cachar district. Feroz Khan of Jaipur-Raja Bazar locality in Cachar, Vivek Kashyav of Bhanpuri village in Raipur locality of Chhattisgarh and Suresh Kumar Sahu of New Durga Nagar village in Raipur locality of Chhattisgarh.
The BSF has registered an FIR at Lakhipur police station and deposited the seized goods in the police station.
