Radukanu fell 3–1 early, but the quarter-final match changed when he broke 11th seed Bencic – who had only lost a serve three times in four rounds – even at 3 during his five straight games. Too.
Radukanu, ranked 150, followed Billie Jean King in 1979 and 2009 champion Kim Clijsters as the only woman outside the top 100 of the rankings to reach a US Open semi-final.

He was not even ranked in the top 350 just three months before a run in the fourth round Wimbledon. Radukanu will play number 4 Karolina Pliskova or 17th seeded Maria Sakkari in the semi-finals.
