Breaking: RBI To Stop Circulation Of Rs 2000 Currency Notes, Will Remain Legal Tender

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes. However, the notes will remain legal tender till September 30, says RBI.

In a statement on Friday, the central bank said: “In pursuance of the Reserve Bank of India’s “Clean Note Policy”, it has been decided to withdraw ₹2000 denomination bank notes from circulation. ₹2000 denomination bank notes The notes will continue to be legal tender. In order to complete this process in a time-bound manner and to provide sufficient time to members of the public, all banks shall provide deposit and/or exchange facilities for ₹2000 notes by September 30, 2023.

RBI has requested banks to facilitate deposit and exchange of Rs 2000 notes by September 30, 2023. In the statement RBI clarified that the facility of exchange of Rs 2000 bank notes will be available from May 23.

On 8 September 2016, the central government banned old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations with an aim to curb black money.
