Boris Johnson resigns as UK PM Boris Johnson has resigned as Prime Minister of Britain. Earlier in the day, Johnson agreed to resign after several days of defection that crippled the controversial leader and left him unable to govern.

Announcing his resignation outside 10, Downing Street, Johnson acknowledged that “no one is remotely indispensable”, adding that he was saddened to leave the “best job in the world”. He also expressed his unhappiness at leaving the ‘best job in the world’.

Highlighting the actions under his leadership, the outgoing Conservative leader said Britain has led the way in supporting Ukraine amid Russia’s military aggression. Johnson stressed that he was proud of what he had done, referring to Brexit and his government’s response to the COVID pandemic.

Johnson said, “I know there will be many people who will feel relieved and there will probably be others who will be disappointed. I wanted you to know how sad I am to leave the best job in the world.”

Johnson eventually agreed to step down after one of his closest aides, Treasury chief Nadim Zhawi, asked the prime minister to resign for the good of the country. It was not immediately clear whether Johnson would remain in office while the Conservative Party chooses a new leader, who would also automatically become prime minister. A formal announcement is expected later on Thursday.

“Prime Minister: This is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative Party and most importantly for the entire country,” Jahvi said in a letter to Johnson. “You should do the right thing and go now.”

Jahvi’s intervention came after two more members of Johnson’s cabinet resigned, as well as three junior officials, this week, raising the number of those leaving the government to the previous 50.

Johnson on Wednesday rejected calls to resign, arguing that he has received a mandate from voters to remain in office. But by Thursday morning, the man of fame was forced to accept the reality of his position for walking out of political controversies.
