Bhubaneswar: Border Security Force (BSF) said on Tuesday that they have successfully overcome Maoist revival In Malkangiri And Koraput Districts once infamous for being the hotbeds of left wing extremism (LWE).
The BSF, on the eve of its foundation day, said their growing presence in both the districts has shocked the Maoist leadership, stopped extremist recruitments and forced many Naxalites to surrender in the past few years.
“Odisha has witnessed a significant decline in Left Wing Extremism after the deployment of BSF in 2010. Koraput and Malkangiri have witnessed a major change as BSF is helping the state police in carrying out anti-Naxal operations and helping the government in development works. The Gurupriya bridge may be built in the east cut-off area of ​​Malkangiri due to the presence of BSF, said Inspector General of BSF in Odisha, Satish Chandra Budakoti.
The BSF said the threat of Left Wing Extremism has reduced with the Maoists facing a leadership crisis after the anti-Naxal operations intensified in the last few years. Police said sources said that at present around 250 Maoists, including 18 Odia cadres, are active in Odisha. Of the total 21 members of the Maoist Central Committee in the country, three work in Odisha. All three members of the central committee were from Telangana. The 18 Odia cadres are mostly headed by Nikhil and Bunty.
Budakoti said, “We have set up 48 Company Operating Bases (COBs) in Koraput and Malkangiri. The setting up of the COB has increased the sense of security among the local people and instilled a sense of fear among the Maoists. The recruitment of Maoists has almost stopped. Is.”
BSF personnel were first deployed in 2010 in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Nabarangapur districts. At present, there are four BSF battalions in Malkangiri and Koraput districts. In the last 11 years, the BSF along with the state security forces have killed 63 Maoists, including 9 Maoists this year. A total of 790 Maoists were arrested and 629 Naxalites surrendered during this period after joint operation by BSF and State Police.
Budakoti said the BSF is taking poor tribals to various places in and outside the state under its ‘Tribal Youth Exchange’ programme.
