The previous Uddhav-led government had created 236 BMC wards, but after the Shinde-Fadnavis government came to power, they revised the decision and reduced it to 227 wards again.

In a major blow to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, the Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by former BMC councilor Raju Pednekar of the Thackeray faction challenging the number of seats won by the Eknath Shinde government. The reduction decision was challenged. Ward 236 to 227.

The previous Uddhav-led government had created 236 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wards, but this was later revised to 227 after the Shinde-Fadnavis government came to power.

A division bench of Justices SB Shukre and MW Chandwani said that it does not find any merit in the petitions and hence they are dismissed.

The Bombay High Court accepted the stand taken by the State Government and the Election Commission.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had decided in November 2021 to increase the number of wards from 227 to 236.

In their petitions, former BMC councilors Raju Pednekar and Sameer Desai challenged the Shinde government’s decision, claiming that it sought to roll back time.

The petitioners claimed that the reversal of the delimitation from 236 to 227 was arbitrary and may delay the civic polls.
