Posters of Bollywood movies were seen on the streets of Kashmir after a gap of 30 years.

After getting its first multiplex last year, Bollywood Posters of the film are now seen on the streets of Srinagar. It is after 30 years that the posters of the film have been seen in Kashmir where cinema halls were shut since armed insurgency began in the 1990s.

These posters have been pasted at various places like Radio Kashmir Road, Dal Lake and other places in the city. A multiplex was reopened last year, bringing a great joy to film lovers in Kashmir, which was seen as a filmmaker’s paradise before the insurgency started. Ajay Devgan starrer ‘Bhola’ has been highlighted in the poster.

Kashmir has not seen any film activity, but with the situation getting better, not only filmmakers are visiting Kashmir, but the government is also trying to revive the cinema culture.

“I have been to Kashmir at least 25 times but have never seen the posters of the film. I come from Mumbai where such scenes are common. This is the first time I have seen posters around Dal Lake,” said Vinay, a tourist.

Once upon a time, huge banners and posters were put up on the streets of Kashmir and newspapers were full of advertisements for films. There used to be many cinema halls in the Kashmir Valley. One would look at old photographs of cinema halls in Srinagar and one would see hand made film banners and posters but these scenes had completely disappeared.

Mushtaq Ahmed, a Srinagar-based film lover, says films are welcome in the Valley. “We have seen the posters for the first time after years, although I have not seen any film here, there was a great need for cinema here,” he said.

The government has recently introduced a film policy which will make it easier for films to be shot in Kashmir and many top directors are now shooting in Kashmir with the support of the J&K administration.
