Blood clot may be the root cause of long-term covid: Study – World Latest News Headlines

A new study has found evidence that patients with long-term covid syndrome have higher blood clotting measures. The authors say this may help explain their persistent symptoms, such as low fitness and fatigue.

The study, led by researchers from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Ireland, is published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

In long-term covid syndrome, symptoms can last for weeks to months after the initial infection has resolved and is estimated to affect millions of people worldwide. Researchers examined 50 patients with long-term symptoms of the COVID syndrome to better understand whether abnormal blood clots were involved.

They found that the clotting markers were significantly elevated in the blood of patients with long covid syndrome compared to healthy controls.

These clotting markers were higher in patients who required hospitalization with their initial COVID-19 infections, but they also found that those who were able to manage their illness at home were still more frequent
