BJP won’t let celebratory mood come in the way of estimating losses in 2024 race

With electoral victories in four of the five states, the BJP is gearing up to form the government in the states. Meetings are in full swing from the capital of the states to the capital of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, party’s national president JP Nadda and party’s national organization general secretary BL Santosh are meeting continuously to decide on the selection of chief ministers and their cabinets.

The caretaker chief ministers for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur are visiting Delhi along with the state presidents and state organization general secretaries of their respective states.

Though it is a big victory for the party, yet the party is also reviewing its defeat apart from celebrating it. The defeat is being analyzed not only for Punjab, but also the loss suffered by the party in the remaining four states.

A senior BJP leader told IANS that reviewing election results has always been the BJP’s natural strategy. However, since there is not much time left for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, this time the election results are being reviewed keeping in mind the strategy of the general election so that the party can improve its election preparations.

The BJP is going to form the second consecutive government in Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha. Though this is a historic achievement for the party, the high command always works keeping in mind the strategy for the coming years. Thus, the party is doing a thorough evaluation of its performance in five states so that it can take a lesson for the future.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP and its allies have won 273 seats – 52 seats less than their victory at 325 seats in 2017. Similarly, in Uttarakhand, the BJP had won 57 seats in 2017, which came down to 47. 2022.

Meanwhile, BJP’s seats in Goa and Manipur have increased as compared to 2017, though the party has not been able to achieve its target.

The most disappointing performance for the party was in Punjab, where despite contesting with full force, the party could win only two seats this time. In 2017, it won three seats in Punjab.

In such a situation, BJP has started reviewing the defeat from every angle. In the round of meetings that lasted for several hours, the seats lost are being discussed. The reasons for the defeat are being analyzed and accordingly further strategy is being made.

Interestingly, as part of the booth-wise review, the party is also weeding out those booths where its winning candidates have got less votes. It is obvious that after the formation of the government, ministers and leaders will be given the responsibility of paying special attention to such booths.

The BJP high command is also taking feedback from leaders of various levels including Chief Ministers, senior ministers, state presidents, state organization general secretaries and state level veterans and MPs.

On March 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself asked all party MPs to prepare a report after assessing the 100 lost booths in their respective areas at the Ambedkar International Center in New Delhi to find out the reasons for the defeat.
