BJP stakes claim in Gadag-Betgeri Municipal Council. Hubli News – Times of India

Gadag: After a gap of 14 years, BJP managed to seize power in Gadag-Betgeri Municipal Council ,GBCMCOn Monday, Usha Mahesh Dasar of the saffron party was elected as the president of the urban local body, while Sunanda Prakash Bakale was elected the vice-president.
Though the BJP had managed to secure a simple majority in the recently held GBCMC elections, winning 18 out of 35 local body seats, claiming power proved to be an uphill task for the saffron party. The Congress, which won 15 seats, managed to garner the support of two rebel councillors, who had contested independently, to help consolidate their position. Though the saffron party tried to bring in three MLCs and one Rajya Sabha MP from other districts to make the battle for the posts of President and Vice President a formality, but Election commission The Congress thwarted its plan, agreeing to consider the applications of MLCs and Rajya Sabha MPs after the elections were over. Congress’s Laxman Chandavari and Shakuntala Akki filed nominations for the post of President and Vice President of GBCMC respectively.
On Monday morning, supporters of both the sides started descending on the GBCMC grounds and the premises had a battlefield-like atmosphere on the eve of the battle. When former minister and Congress MLA HK Patilo Reached GBCMC, BJP supporters raised slogans in favor of their leaders like CC Patil, Congress workers raised slogans praising their leaders to congratulate the BJP MLAs and ministers, Before the start of the elections, BJP functionary Anil Mensinakai, while interacting with the media, accused the Congress of resorting to unethical methods to grab power in the Council.
Both Usha Mahesh Dassar and Sunanda Prakash Dasle secured 19 votes, with BJP’s Haveri MP Shivkumar Udasi casting the deciding vote – Congress candidates got 18 votes, including votes cast by two independents and MLA HK Patil.
The result was announced by Assistant Commissioner Rayappa Hunsagi. HK Patil, however, alleged that the election was not conducted in a transparent manner, adding that the Congress would take the legal route to challenge the results.
