BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that even the king would bow down to Kejriwal’s choice of “superior” products and “craving for luxury and comfort” in his residence.

Amid reports of AAP chief minister Arvind Kejriwal spending around Rs 45 crore on “beautification” of the chief minister’s residence, both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress have criticized the AAP convener and raised questions over the expenditure.

At the same time, Congress leader Ajay Maken questioned Kejriwal’s right to continue in his post. Maken on Tuesday alleged that Kejriwal spent public money on his palatial bungalow, which included extravagant items like Dior polish, Vietnam marble, expensive curtains and expensive carpets.

The BJP, on the other hand, alleged that such a huge amount indicates an ideological “renewal” of the AAP founder, who claimed to promote honesty and simplicity when he entered politics.

AAP Backs Kejriwal

In defense of Kejriwal during conversation times nowSenior AAP leader Raghav Chadha said that the Chief Minister’s residence was built 75-80 years ago in 1942. The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi government had recommended its renovation after the audit.

A senior PWD official said, “It was not a renovation and a new structure has been built in place of the old one. He also has a camp office. The expenditure is around Rs 44 crores but the thing to be noted is that new structures have been constructed by replacing the old ones.”

Documents provided by sources show that against the sanctioned amount of Rs 43.70 crore, a total of Rs 44.78 crore was spent on “addition/alteration” of Kejriwal’s official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road, Civil Lines.

A Hindustan Times The report said that AAP has issued a statement defending the expenditure. “The house was built 80 years ago in 1942, was in a dilapidated condition. After three serious incidents, which included the ceiling collapse of the Chief Minister’s parents’ room, the ceiling collapse of the Chief Minister’s bedroom, and the collapse of the office ceiling, the Public Works Department has recommended the construction of a new house,” the statement said Hindustan Times,

how was it spent

The money was spent in six installments between September 9, 2020 and June, 2022, the documents show.

According to the documents, the total expenditure includes Rs 11.30 crore for interior decoration, Rs 6.02 crore for stone and marble flooring, Rs 1 crore for interior consultancy, Rs 2.58 crore for electrical fittings and appliances, Rs 2.85 crore for fire fighting system, Rs 2.85 crore 1.41 crore on wardrobes and accessories fitting and Rs 1.1 crore on kitchen appliances.

It shows that out of the sanctioned amount of Rs 9.99 crore, an amount of Rs 8.11 crore was spent separately on the camp office located at the Chief Minister’s residence.
