The West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee presented a budget of Rs 3.39 lakh crore for 2023-24 in the assembly.

The BJP on Wednesday said the West Bengal budget is a ‘tamasha’ to fool the public ahead of the panchayat elections.

The West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee presented a budget of Rs 3.39 lakh crore for 2023-24 in the assembly.

“It is a directionless budget which has failed to provide any direction to the state to come out of its debt-ridden situation,” he said. The budget is a complete farce. They have announced 3 per cent additional DA for state government employees, what about the remaining 32 per cent DA which is still due?” state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar told a press conference.

“Since there is a pending court case regarding non-release of pending DA by the state, he has given this bailout,” he added.

Hitting out at the TMC government for failing to attract industries, Majumdar claimed it was yet to create any useful source of revenue generation.

“No big industry has come up in this state in the last 11 years. The state government is working on Dole’s politics.

“The allegation that the Center has withheld funds is baseless. No other opposition-ruled state has ever made this allegation.”

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari claimed that the budget did not address the burning problems of the common people of the state.

He said, ‘The budget has been prepared keeping in mind the upcoming panchayat elections and the Lok Sabha elections to be held next year. This budget reflects the financial bankruptcy of the state,” the official said.

He claimed that the announcement on DA was made by the government “to save itself from the Supreme Court where a hearing in this regard was held on March 15”. BJP MLA Ashok Lahiri, a noted economist, said the TMC government was very good at making announcements.

“The state government is claiming that it has topped the charts in MNREGA. Is it a good thing that the people of the state have given up hope of getting permanent jobs and are now dependent on them? Is it a badge of honor or a mark of shame?” he questioned.
