AAP’s chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj had claimed that the appointments were a ploy by the BJP to gain control over the standing committee and regional committees of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

The Delhi BJP on Sunday criticized the Aam Aadmi Party for questioning the LG’s nomination of 10 aldermen to the MCD, saying the Kejriwal government had nominated 30 people associated with the AAP during its previous tenure to the civic body.

Delhi BJP spokesperson PS Kapoor said it would have been better if the Aam Aadmi Party, before questioning the political background of those appointed as aldermen, recalled the political background of those nominated by the Kejriwal government to the 2017-22 Corporation House.

His statement came in response to AAP’s earlier allegations that people associated with the BJP were nominated by the LG as aldermen.

AAP’s chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj had claimed that the appointments were a ploy by the BJP to gain control over the standing committee and regional committees of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

“Article 243R of the Constitution states that aldermen should be experts with special knowledge of municipal administration. The LG planned to sideline the elected government so that he could appoint BJP leaders as members and chairpersons of the Standing Committee and give control of the zone committees to the party.

Hitting back at Bhardwaj, Kapoor said the Aam Aadmi Party should have done a background check of the leaders nominated to the three MCD houses from 2017-22 before raising the issue.

He said that in 2017, the Delhi government had the right to appoint 10 aldermen, but 30 AAP workers were appointed.

The three corporations were merged last year to form a unified MCD.

He said AAP spokespersons Ghanendra Bhardwaj and Capt Shalini live in the South Delhi Corporation area, but were appointed aldermen of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Kapoor said Alderman Haji Yunus, appointed in East DMC in 2017, became Aam Aadmi Party MLA in 2020 and Alderman Atul Gupta contested as MLA from Vishwas Nagar in 2020 on AAP ticket.

Similarly, BS Joon was nominated as an alderman in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, who became the Aam Aadmi Party’s MLA from Bijwasan in 2020, Kapoor said.

He said Kuldeep Mittal and Satyapal Kaim are also associated with AAP and yet they have been nominated as aldermen.

Kapoor said all the former chieftains openly claim to be AAP leaders and have put up boards and nameplates citing their affiliation in their areas.
