New Delhi: Amid national outrage over a May 4 video of two tribal women being attacked and stripped naked by a mob in Manipur, Bengal BJP MP Locket Chatterjee on Friday wept while recalling similar incidents during panchayat polls in the Mamata Banerjee-ruled state. Hitting out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, she said when she is celebrating ‘Martyrs’ Day’, women in the state are being “stripped” and paraded.
Addressing reporters, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said he condemned what happened in Manipur, a reference to the May 4 viral video of two women being paraded naked in the violence-hit northeastern state.
He claimed that similar crimes are happening in Bengal as well. Citing several alleged incidents, he said, the only difference is that the incidents in Bengal were not recorded on camera.
Two BJP leaders alleged that a woman was stripped and assaulted at a polling booth during the recent panchayat elections in West Bengal.
Both the leaders condemned the incident in Manipur, but asked whether there was a need to make videos of similar crimes in West Bengal go viral to draw attention to the situation there. He claimed that a TMC leader was involved in one of the attacks.
