BJP leader Kanwar Singh Tanwar booked for cheating real estate developer

Delhi Police has registered a case against BJP leader Kanwar Singh Tanwar for allegedly cheating a real estate developer of over Rs 65 crore. Officials gave this information on Tuesday. He said that the Economic Offenses Wing of the police had registered an FIR against Tanwar on August 23 on the direction of a court. Police said a case has been registered against him under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. As per the FIR, Brahma City Private Limited was in the process of acquiring land in Gurgaon, Haryana, to develop an integrated township.

The company had appointed Ranjan Gupta as a facilitator for land acquisition. In 2008-2009, Gupta introduced Tanwar to the company and the accused elaborated on his credentials and claimed that he and his companies and associates owned a large tract of land in the area, according to the FIR. Represented that he can also arrange and negotiate. For the cooperation of farmers and development of land, it said. The FIR states that Tanwar offered to transfer all rights over a total of 105 acres of land in favor of the company at Rs 3.30 crore per acre. As per an agreement, Brahma City Private Limited paid Rs 84,35,00,000 to the accused and his associate persons or companies for the transfer of all rights over 63 acres of land.

The FIR states that the accused failed to perform his role as per the agreement and a dispute arose between him and the company over the transfer of rights over 63 acres of land. In 2010, the Directorate, Town and Country Planning, Haryana issued a license to Brahma City Pvt Ltd to develop residential townships, it said. The FIR states that Tanwar later demanded an additional Rs 15 crore for the arrangement of 54 acres of land.

The company paid a total of Rs 210.18 crore for the transfer of all rights of 63 acres of land to the accused. Whereas, till date, the accused has transferred only 48 acres of land in favor of the company, it said. The FIR states that as per the agreement reached between them, the total amount received by Tanwar against the transfer of all rights of the said 48 acres of land is only Rs 158.75 crore. It said that the accused is liable to refund a total of Rs 51.43 crore to Brahma City Pvt Ltd. The accused is also liable to pay interest amounting to Rs 14 crore.
