Several BJP leaders and workers, including Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva, were detained by the police while they were marching towards Sonia Gandhi’s residence.

The Delhi BJP on Tuesday staged a sit-in near Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s residence here, demanding an apology from her party spokesperson Pawan Khera over his “derogatory” remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father.

Several BJP leaders and workers, including Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva, were detained by the police while they were marching towards Sonia Gandhi’s residence.

Sachdeva, who is leading the protest, said Kheda’s words reflect the character of the Congress.

“The derogatory words used by Khera show the character of him and the Congress. He should be dropped from the Congress and Sonia Gandhi should apologize for his conduct.” Khera, while criticizing the central government over the recent controversy involving the business conglomerate headed by Gautam Adani, called the prime minister “Narendra Gautam Das Modi”. The ruling party has accused him of making fun of the Prime Minister and his late father.

Prime Minister Modi’s full name is Narendra Damodardas Modi, with the middle name Damodardas standing for his father’s name, a common practice in many parts of the country.

Raising slogans against Kheda and the Congress, BJP leaders and workers marched from Le Meridien Hotel to Sonia Gandhi’s residence at 10 Janpath. The police stopped them by putting up barricades.

They were later released, police said.

BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri alleged that the Congress was scared of the Prime Minister’s reputation, so it was conspiring to “malign” his image by using “hate speech”.

Bidhuri said, “Kheda’s use of foul language to tarnish the image of the prime minister is a well-planned conspiracy as the Congress is scared of Modi.”

Leader of the Opposition Ramveer Singh Bidhuri said the statements against the father of the “world’s most popular” prime minister are absolutely inexcusable and the BJP is not going to sit silent on such acts.

He said that if Congress leaders continue to behave “disrespectfully” while referring to the Prime Minister, then after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress will further decline and it will “disappear”.
