Elections are over, results are out, but a fight is still going on in Manipur. Who will be the Chief Minister? Before going to the polls, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party had not officially nominated the incumbent chief minister. N Biren Singh as its choice.
Sources inside the party were of the opinion that since there was a fight of factions, the central leadership did not reveal the CM’s face.
Biren successfully ran the state for the past five years as chief minister, but he came up against rivals within the party.
Thongam Biswajit Singh is one of the challengers. He had actually joined BJP before Biren Singh. Party insiders say that he thought in 2017 that he would be the chief minister because of his seniority.
But the central leadership of the party chose Biren and Biswajit was not happy with it.
He was given some very important departments in the government. However, sources say that Biswajit went to Delhi several times to talk to the top leadership against Biren.
During election campaign BJP President JP Nadda had said at least twice that Manipur has developed under the able leadership of N Biren Singh. Observers concluded that the party was considering hiring him after the election victory. BJP has won 32 out of 60 assembly seats in Manipur election results Came out on Thursday.
But, sources say that if either Biren or Biswajit is made the CM, then the supporters of the other can create a ruckus.
Another name has also surfaced. Kontoujam Govinddas Singh was the first state Congress president, who joined the BJP in August 2021. One thing in his favor is that he has a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) background.
Govinddas won from Bishnupur constituency in the recent Manipur elections and has a good support base.
“In our party, the central leadership decides who will be the chief minister, and whoever they choose, we will go accordingly,” state BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharada Devi said on Friday.

Biren resigned as CM on Friday, as is customary, and the party could make its choice on Saturday.
