Biological E selected by WHO as recipient of mRNA technology to produce COVID-19 vaccines

Hyderabad: City-based vaccine maker Biologicals E. Ltd. on Monday said the company was selected from the World Health Organization as the recipient of mRNA technology for making COVID-19 vaccines.

The WHO’s Advisory Committee on Vaccine Product Development (ACPDV) after examining several proposals from India as a recipient of mRNA (ribonucleic acid) technology from the global health body’s Technology Transfer Center said a press release by BE Ltd. Firm selected.

Mahima Datla, Managing Director, BE Ltd. said: “BE has been investing in mRNA technologies since last year. This new technology will certainly strengthen our resolve to develop and manufacture more vaccines in the future. This partnership with WHO Will enhance our ability to develop further generation mRNA vaccines that may be more globally suitable and expand the reach of vaccine availability around the world.” Will work with the Government of India and Biological E to provide the necessary training and support to begin production of mRNA vaccines as soon as possible.

Established primarily to address the COVID-19 emergency, the WHO mRNA Technology Transfer Center has the potential to expand manufacturing capacity for other products, including treatments, and target other priorities.

mRNA vaccines use a messenger RNA created in the laboratory to teach human cells how to produce proteins that in turn initiate an immune response inside the body against a particular disease. The immune response will fight the actual virus as it enters the body.

Currently, India does not have any COVID-19 vaccine made on the mRNA platform.

Last month, the Center approved the administration of organic EK Corbevax to the age group of 12-14 years across the country.
