Bill against NEET introduced in Tamil Nadu Assembly amid AIADMK walkout

Tamil Nadu government on Monday Introduced a bill to urge the Center to do away with medical entrance exams NEET on the grounds that it is adversely discriminatory for rural candidates. Chief Minister MK Stalin introduces bill in Assembly during AIADMK walkout Condemning the death of a 20-year-old NEET student.

“DMK had promised to abolish NEET before the elections, why didn’t it happen. The bisexual position of the DMK government has affected the students. The DMK government is responsible for the death of Salem candidate Dhanush,” Edappadi Palaniswami said after the walkout.

The Edappadi Palaniswami-led AIADMK government had moved a resolution requesting the Center to scrap NEET, but the move did not yield the expected results.

The medical entrance exam NEET has been an emotional issue in Tamil Nadu after an aspirant, Anita, killed herself after the failure of her legal efforts to get exemption from the exam and to get medical admission through board exams conducted by the state.

The fear of passing the exam has led to at least 15 suicides in Tamil Nadu, according to Chepauk MLA Udayanidhi Stalin’s count. Coaching centres, including government-run efforts, have emerged to help students meet the challenge, but still, rural candidates have less support than urban residents. On Sunday, Dhanush S, an aspirant from a village near Salem in Tamil Nadu, committed suicide fearing that his third attempt might fail.

As soon as the news of Dhanush’s death came, a political blame game started between the AIADMK and the DMK. While the AIADMK blamed the DMK for giving false hopes to the students, Uday Stalin accused the Palaniswami government of doing little to move the needle to scrap NEET.

The opposition to NEET has been formalized by the DMK government with the introduction of the bill in the assembly. It sets the stage for state-centre collaborative exchanges on how to exempt the state from controversial medical testing.
