Kalidas, who is called ‘Mango Man’ in Bihar, is so expert in growing mangoes since childhood that this title has become his identity.

Do not be surprised if you go to the fruit market after some time and find mangoes in the name of the Prime Minister. Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This may very soon be true, the brain behind it is Kalidas Banerjee, a common farmer from Katihar district of Bihar, adjoining West Bengal. His 10-acre garden has around 500 mango trees and here, you will find around 29 different varieties of delicious mangoes named after eminent personalities like Chittaranjan Das and Swami Vivekananda.

Known as the ‘Mango Man’ in Bihar, Kalidas has been so good at growing mangoes since childhood that this title has become his identity. He is continuously producing new varieties of mangoes using cross grafting processes, which are then tested by Bihar Agricultural University and then sold across the country. Kalidas says that he always wanted to name his mangoes after famous eminent personalities. The mangoes named after Chittaranjan Das and Swami Vivekananda have already been grown from their orchards and are available in the market. These mangoes are popular not only in Bihar but also in the adjoining state of West Bengal.

Now two more varieties of mango are being grown by Kalidas in his garden, and they will be called Modi and Yogi mangoes. These mangoes will reportedly be completely sugar free and will be shipped to several states across the country like Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

He says that this will be a gift from the farmers of Bihar to both the leaders. Kalidas has also said that he also wishes to introduce a new variety of mango which he plans to name after former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
