Bihar: Patna Reports 11 Shooting Incidents in 2 Weeks, Question Mark Over Law & Order Situation

A 42-year-old bus owner was killed in indiscriminate firing near Bairia stand in Patna late on Wednesday night in a dispute over agency, supremacy and extortion. The attackers surrounded them from all sides and started firing on them. Not only this, in the last two weeks, 11 such incidents of firing have come to light from the capital of Bihar, which has raised a question mark on the law and order situation in the state.

Five people have died in these accidents and six are undergoing treatment. These steps took place in Kadamkuan, Kankarbagh, Shastri Nagar, Gandhi Maidan and Agamkuan police station areas.

These incidents have given the opposition in Bihar an opportunity to criticize the Grand Alliance government led by Nitish Kumar and many are calling it the return of ‘Jungle Raj’.

“Crime has become prominent. It reminds us of the old days. There is no doubt that this is ‘Jungle Raj 2’. Earlier Patna was stable. If people are unsafe in the capital, think about the situation in the interior of Bihar. The government and its machinery have failed miserably. Police officers are also not taking responsibility. This is highly condemnable,” said BJP MLA Sanjeev Chaurasia cnn-news18,

JD(U) MLC and national spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said the state government had been successful in controlling organized crime, adding that it was a “new trend” involving youths in the age group of 18 to 23 years.

“These incidents are not organized crime as we have controlled it. But a new trend has started in which youths in the age group of 18-23 years are involved in such crimes. Many reasons account for this. Separation of families, alienation, dry intoxication are some of them. The Government is constantly reviewing the nature of offenses and taking necessary steps from time to time. The new trend is a challenge and we are working on it.

Alliance partner RJD spokesperson Shakti Yadav said the law will take its own course and no one will be spared. “Bihar is known for its governance and we ensure that criminals do not go unpunished,” he said. He said that the police is probing these incidents and the history-sheeters are being identified.

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Manavjit Singh Dhillon was not available for comment. At least 13 IPS officers are posted in Patna district. The police claim to have eight types of patrolling in the state capital, but it is all in vain as far as preventive measures are concerned.

BJP general secretary and MLC Devesh Kumar said that when law-breakers become legislators, the fear of law vanishes. “This is what you get when posting officers other than on merit. This is a complete breakdown of the law and order situation and one of the major reasons for this is political interference from the bottom to the top. When the police stop doing their basic work i.e. policing, then a situation of anarchy arises.
