BIG NEWS! Qatar Court Accepts India’s Plea To Review Death Sentence Of Eight Ex-Indian Navy Personnel

A recent report reveals that a Qatar court has agreed to review the death sentence imposed on eight former Indian Navy personnel, following an appeal by India. Arrested last year, these individuals now have an opportunity for their appeal against the death penalty to be heard after the Qatar court’s recent decision. The court in Qatar sentenced these Indians to death on October 26 last month.

The Ministry of External Affairs expressed astonishment at this severe punishment and assured the families that the Government of India is actively exploring all available legal avenues. These individuals, engaged with a defense service provider, were apprehended last year and have since been incarcerated without explanation to their families regarding the grounds for their arrest.

The arrest of Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vashishtha, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purendu Tiwari, Commander Sagunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Rajesh took place in Doha in 2022. Notably, these former naval officers hold a distinguished service record of up to 20 years in the Indian Navy, having served in pivotal roles, including as instructors within the force.

The arrested personnel include Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh, all of whom were apprehended in Doha.
