According to sources, 12 of its 18 MLAs have joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Meghalaya, giving a big blow to the Congress party.

After this move, TMC is now the major opposition party in Meghalaya.

Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is also among the leaders who changed the party. Sangma, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, was reportedly unhappy with the top leadership of the Congress.

A senior TMC leader said that with the new MLAs, the Trinamool Congress has become the major opposition party in the state.

Sources said that with an eye on Meghalaya elections in 2023, members of the team of election strategist Prashant Kishor are in Shillong to consider TMC’s options in the state.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recently increased the jurisdiction of the BSF to 50 km inside the international borders in West Bengal, Punjab and Assam. The West Bengal Assembly had on November 16 passed a resolution against the Centre’s decision, becoming the second state after Punjab to oppose the move in the state legislature.

“I have told the Prime Minister that there is no need to increase the territorial jurisdiction of BSF, as it would come in direct conflict with the law and order situation of the state. Recently, BSF killed three people and there are many such cases. When BSF personnel opened fire on villagers. I have told the Prime Minister that if they (BSF) need any help, we are ready to provide, but the Center should withdraw the expansion of BSF’s territorial area. after the meeting.
