In his fifth round of judicial nominations, the US President Joe Biden Indian-American Shalina D Kumar nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Justice Kumar, who is currently a Michigan Circuit Court judge, would, if confirmed, be the first federal judge of South Asian descent in Michigan.
Kumar has served on the Oakland County Sixth Circuit Court since 2007. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Circuit Court michigan supreme court in January 2018. In addition to her Chief Justice duties, she holds a full caseload covering both civil and criminal cases.
Throughout his years on the bench, Kumar has served as the presiding judge of the adult treatment court, chairman of the Oakland County Criminal Assignment Committee, bench liaison of the Oakland County Bar Association Circuit Court Committee, member of the Michigan State Bar. Professionalism Committee, and member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Michigan Judges.
Prior to taking the bench, she was a civil litigator in private practice from 1997 to 2007 as an associate with Weiner & Cox plc from 2004 to 2007 and as Sommer, Schwartz, Silver & Schwartz PC from 2000 to 2004 service was involved. University of Michigan in 1993 and the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law in 1996.
Kumar is a member of the South Asian Bar Association of North America and is endorsed by effect, a leading Indian American advocacy group. When he was sworn in as a circuit judge in Oakland County in 2007, his founding ceremony was attended by his parents, Krishna Kumar and Margaret Kumar.
