‘Bhagyanagar’: PM Modi’s comment intensifies speculation of renaming of this city

HyderabadPrime Minister Narendra Modi’s mention of Hyderabad during the BJP’s national executive meeting has fueled speculation about renaming the city if the BJP comes to power in Andhra Pradesh. According to reports, the PM, who was in Hyderabad yesterday, had referred to the Telangana capital as “Bhagyanagar” during his address to party representatives across the country.

It was in Bhagyanagar that the great freedom fighter Sardar Patel coined the term “One India”, the PM said during his address.

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted the Prime Minister in Hyderabad as saying, “PM Modi said Hyderabad is Bhagyanagar which is important for all of us. Sardar Patel laid the foundation of Akhand Bharat and now it is the responsibility of BJP to take it forward.” ”

It may be recalled that the RSS, the ideological fountainhead of the BJP and several BJP leaders have been demanding the renaming of Hyderabad to “Bhagyanagar”.

Later, when asked whether Hyderabad would be renamed as Bhagyanagar, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said, “When the BJP comes to power in the state, the chief minister will decide it along with cabinet colleagues.”

Meanwhile, Telangana minister and Chief Minister KCR’s son KTR has targeted the BJP over the issue.

The BJP’s move to hold its crucial national executive in Hyderabad has indicated that the state is a top priority on its agenda for expansion in areas where it remains relatively weak.

Since coming to power at the Center in 2014, this is only the fourth time the party is holding its major national meeting outside Delhi. Earlier the meeting was held in Odisha in 2017, Kerala in 2016 and Bengaluru in 2015.
