Noida: Jewarin news for the new international airport, attracted attention for very different reasons on Wednesday with the arrival of Avtar Singh Bhadana on the scene.
Muzaffarnagar’s Meerapur MLA Bhadana has joined Jayant Choudhary’s RLD and is likely to be the SP-RLD alliance candidate from Jewar constituency, turning it into a high-voltage battle. Bhadana is a four-time MP, having won thrice from Faridabad and once from Meerut on a Congress ticket. He is now with the BJP, although he contested the 2019 election from Faridabad as a Congress candidate, in which he was defeated. Meanwhile, his resignation from the BJP was never accepted.
Talking to Times of India, Bhadana said that he is ready for a tough fight. “Akhilesh Yadav and Jayant Choudhary are fighting in an alliance and they have told me that I will fight the alliance. Jewar seat has come under seat-sharing arrangement with RLD and I will fight on RLD’s symbol. The alliance needs to win the western UP region to form the government and hence, I have come to help reduce the number of seats won by the BJP,” he said.
An influential Gujjar leader was among those who addressed gatherings of the Bhadana community following a controversy over the plaque of a statue of Emperor Mihir Bhoj in Dadri last September.
He said that he left the BJP as the party did not listen to the farmers, Dalits and people from backward castes. “I have always liked tough matches. The competition is tough and hence I will fight from here. Thakur Dhirendra Singh of BJP is currently representing from Jewar seat.
According to the estimates for the 2017 elections, Jewar has an equal number of Rajputs and Gurjars, the two major communities, an important statistic for candidate selection. A former panchayat member told TOI, “This seat was always represented by a member of the SC/ST community as it was reserved till 2012. Only after that it became a common seat. In 2012, Vedram Bhati of BSP won from here. If the BSP decides to field a candidate who appeals to the Gujjar community as well as Dalits and Muslims, the balance may change,” he said. A local Gujjar leader said the fight could be difficult for the BJP with Bhadana’s arrival, but the BJP candidate could also benefit from the division of votes. He said, “The Gujjar community is unhappy because of the recent Samrat Mihir Bhoj controversy, but if the BSP fields a Gurjar candidate, it is possible that the vote will be split, which will help the BJP.” There are speculations that BSP can field Gurjar Narendra Dhada from this seat.
Thakur Dhirendra Singh said that BJP is confident of victory. We will fight on the issue of development. BJP is ready for any fight.
