WhatsApp has slowly become a hub of spam calls and messages but a new issue has become even more dangerous.

WhatsApp has become a hub for spam and marketing messages, which is why millions of people jumped from traditional SMS to the messaging app. But the sophistication of scams on WhatsApp is evolving.

Now, you don’t have to worry about annoying promotional messages from brands (who don’t have your consent to send you messages on WhatsApp), regular WhatsApp calls (both audio and video) from people random international numbers who Coming from countries like Malaysia, Kenya and Vietnam as per given ISD code.

Most people are understandably alarmed by calls from these countries and are also concerned about how these scammers got their numbers. As you may know, WhatsApp works through VoIP networks, so these people can call from any country at no extra charge. These incidents are not isolated and searching through social media you will find that many people are facing this issue.

We have also received calls on WhatsApp to the codes +60 (Malaysia), +254 (Kenya) and +84 (Vietnam). While others have reported calls from +62 (Indonesia) and +223 (Mali).

No one knows the agenda of these calls and the caller but in most of the cases when you get a call from a random number, there are chances that they are trying to scam you into revealing confidential data that can be used to access your account. Or may aid their purpose of stealing money from others.

Having said that, just because you are getting calls from international numbers, it does not mean that the call originated from that country. These days you have agencies that sell international numbers for WhatsApp calls while you are in the same city.

WhatsApp provides encryption for calls and messages which makes it difficult to trace the person, and it seems hackers are using this to scam users.
