BENGALURU: A police sub-inspector (PSI) attached with Vijaynagar traffic police station has been issued a show-cause notice for allegedly manhandling a two-wheeler rider during routine check on Wednesday. The rider had said he had no money to pay the Rs 2,500 fine slapped on him for various violations committed earlier and would pay up in court later.
The notice came after a video of the incident went viral. The biker was flagged down in Vijaynagar; Police checked records and found that his vehicle had been fined about Rs 2,500 for violations.
The video shows traffic PSI Chandrashekar sitting on a chair. The rider, who apparently shot the video, is heard asking the sub-inspector why he assaulted him. “I will pay the fine, I don’t have the money now. I will pay in court. But why did you hit me,” the rider is heard asking. Chandrashekar is then heard challenging the rider to take his vehicle back. He is also heard asking the biker to come to the police station.
Once the police officer comes near the rider, another round of scuffle ensues, the video footage shows. “You have again assaulted me. You first said you didn’t assault me. Now I have this video showing you assaulting me. You have broken my helmet and thrown it away,” the rider is heard saying, as he zooms on the helmet lying by the roadside.
Deputy commissioner of police (west-traffic) Kuldeep Kumar R Jain, who issued a show-cause notice, said, “I saw the video. It is not true and has been edited. The rider was injured. But he had a helmet, which was faulty and while removing it, he hurt his hand. Secondly, he didn’t have money to pay, that is why he was asking for time. We waited for long. What’s shown in the video isn’t how the incident unravelled . The general opinion of the public about the PSI is very good. However, we have issued a show-cause notice.”
A fortnight ago, an assistant sub-inspector of traffic police was suspended after a video showing him kicking and verbally assaulting a differently abled woman went viral on social media.
